The man who translated the Book of Mormon from the golden plates was Joseph Smith Jr. and he was given those plates by the angel Moroni. The second that his dad read the book he thought he was trying to replace the bible (which he disapproved of) but Joseph told him that it was merely and addition to the bible, but took place in the ancient Americas.
