    There were a lot of free states between the abolitionist in the norht and the slavist in the south.

    Explanation:

    In 1854 there were still several states that hadn't decided wether to join the union or to separate and become independent or become a new union, so the main concern to the northern states when looking at a map would be that there were lost of free states debating between siding with the abolitionists and the southern states.

    Northern abolitionists looked at the map in 1854 and they would have concerned as southerners were all slave states and northern abolitionists were in the middle of free states.
