In direct rule, there is a central power holds direct control over a fully functional self-governing state by controlling its legislature, executive and the administrative factions. The authority is with the mother country and the region is run by colonial officials (local rulers). The native population was excluded from all but the 'lowest level' of the 'colonial government'. The ruling country taught their language, culture to the subordinate territory. The government sought to "civilize" the native people by undermining their culture and beliefs.
