According to Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, President Theodore Roosevelt represented the development of the United States. Therefore, he put him along with President Washington, who represented the birth of the United States; President Jefferson, who represented the nation's growth; and President Lincoln, who represented the United States' preservation.

Between 1927 and October 31, 1941, the sculptor Gutzon Borglum and 400 other workers created the 18-meter-high bust of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln to mark the country's 150th anniversary. Visitors to the park come primarily to see the granite sculptures, but it is also possible to visit the studio used during the works, which was built in 1939 under the direction of the artist.
