For example, in Arkansas the governor used the Arkansas National Guard to stop nine African-American students from attending Central High School. This event, which took place in 1957, resulted in President Eisenhower using the US National Guard to escort these students into their classrooms.

    This situation was somewhat common in the south, as several different public schools and universities did their best to delay integration.
