Read this passage: The state minimum wage is so low that I can't support my family - but state lawmakers have said that there's no way they'll pass a law that raises it. I did some research and found out how to get things started on my own. I collected all the required signatures to put a new law on the ballot. Now, voters will be able to decide for themselves! What procedure, which is available in many states, does the passage describe? A. Initiative B. Referendum C. Impeachment D. Recall

    A. Initiative

In the United States, the initiative is a procedure in which citizens can propose statutes that can go to the ballot. Some states even allow citizens to propose constitutional amendments. It is important to mention that not all states have adopted the initiative, and the procedure of the states that have adopted the initiative may vary from state to state but in general, it guarantees direct and indirect initiatives.

The passage given describes a direct initiative. In the direct process, a citizen can propose a statute, collect enough valid signatures from people and send it to the ballot. In most states, the initiative is passed by the required majority vote.

In the indirect initiative, the proposal is sent to the legislature to be approved or rejected. If it approves the measure or a similar one, the measure do not go to the ballot. But if it rejects it, the initiative goes on the ballot.
