What impact did many state constitutions have on the separation of church and state affairs?

This was based on the First Amendment where government must not get involved in any religious activities or support any kind of religion. It would promote the right to express different opinions that are free of any religious influence. Apart from that governments run by religious institutions tend to suppress rights of the people which goes against democratic ideals.
