Las Casas experienced and participated in mistreatment of the American Indians by the Spanish--therefore he is a very trusted source on the treatment of American Indians by the Spanish.

Bartolome de las Casas was one of the first settlers to arrive in New Spain. He had initially participated in the torture used by the Spanish against the American Indian tribes. As a priest, he was expected to convert people to Catholicism. However, after a bit of time, las Casas came to criticize the treatment of the Spanish viewing it has harsh and un-Christian. Because he created firsthand accounts of the violence, his documents can be viewed as reliable.
