    The correct answer is "C". It refers to an entire universe of people "Americans" as well as the phrase "in excess" which includes many of the indulgences and "deregulations". These are presented as the element of the the main reasons for the "economic crisis" in an extended period of time (the 1920s). Any of the other options qualifies as correct simply because they provide supporting details.
