Read the excerpt from The Ancient City.

We do not know how much education Athenian girls received. Middle and upper class girls learned to read, write and probably play the lyre from a female tutor at home. They only performed physical exercises at festivals, and probably never in public as Spartan girls did. But the Spartans regarded physical health in girls as an important factor in producing future generations of warriors.

In this excerpt, the author compares Athenian and Spartan girls to show that

only wealthier Spartan girls were allowed to perform physical activity.

physical health was the most important part of girls' education.

in all regions physical health was intended to train girls as soldiers.
