    Explanation:

    The US was coming out of the worst defeat in history in Vietnam, while the Soviet Union was struggling economically due to the arms race and commercial constraints. Besides, China and the Soviet Union broke diplomatic relationships and the Soviets feared an alliance of China and the US.

    Improving relations seemed like a good option. During the time it lasted, Detente saw both countries cooperating in international matters and, particularly in Nuclear Weapons control. Which was a priority for the USSR as the arms race heavily burdened them?
