The time in and around the English Channel. The unpredictable weather and strong currents made maneuvering the large ships very difficult. The threats from Sir Francis Drake and English fire ships only added to the damage and losses. The inability to attack as planned gave the English time to counter and turn the tide. This would allow the English to defeat the Spanish and remain free from the rule of the Pope.
