Why did the u. s. department of labor encourage the employment of women in the 1950s?

    The U. S. had many women employed at the end of the 1940's due to World War II and as the troops returned from overseas, not all were able to return to the workforce which encouraged women to continue in the labor market at that time. This trend was encouraged through the 1950's to ensure a robust workforce at home as many men were either fighting in the Korean war or unable to return to the workforce still after World War II.
