Why was the government of the directory unpopular

The government of the Directory was unpopular during the French Revolution because they disregarded the terms of the constitution and when the elections went against them, they prolonged the war to stay in power. They were thus driven to rely upon the armies, which also desired war and were becoming less and less civic in temper.
