What actions did Napoleon take against the Austrians that led to his men referring to him as "the little corporal?"

    The term "Little Corporal" is used and referred to Napoleon because of his physical stature which is short (little) and leading French troops at the Italian border (corporal). Despite this he scored a great victory at the Battle of Lodi where he gained the respect and loyalty of his men.
