A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedy written by William Shakespeare in the mid-1590s.

It is unclear when the play was first written and presented to the public, but it is believed to have been written between 1594 and 1596. Some writers contend that the play may have been written for the marriage of Sir Thomas Berkeley and Elizabeth Carey, in February 1596.

There is no direct source that has served as inspiration for the play, although elements related to Greco-Roman mythology and related classical literature can be found, as well as the history of Romeo and Juliet.

It represents the events that happen around the marriage of Theseus, Duke of Athens, with Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons. It also includes the adventures of four Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors who are controlled by the fairies that inhabit the forest where most of the work takes place.
