Two things that we can infer from the description of Buck's reaction to snow:

Buck was confused to see the snow for the first time. He licked and sniffed it to taste it and then as soon as he stepped into the snow he jumped back from the way it felt. Buck was half Saint Bernard and half Scottish shepherd mixed breed dog. He was very stunned and confused to see the snow for the first time. Like any other dog he sniffed and licked the snow to verify whether its dangerous or not.
