"I claimed Canada for France."

    This statmeent is made by Jacques Cartier When he encountered the micmacs.

    Back then, he planted the cross on top of the native land. The chief got angry because his actions and the Jacques cartier became nervous and said that the cross does not have any deeper meaning.

    So, the statement might actually mean "I tricked Canada for France"
