How has the history and understanding of african art been influenced by colonialism?

    A large part of African art was lost because Western people did not really consider it art. They didn't understand its cultural and artistic value so most of it was ignored and huge amounts of it were lost or destroyed or similar. Artists were also forgotten because of this and only in more modern times was interest in African art actually increased.
