Captain James Cook served with the British Navy and is most famous for making detailed maps of the Pacific Ocean. He was also the first European to make contact on the eastern coasts of Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. On his third voyage to the Pacific was killed by the native Hawaiians after he tried to kidnap and ransom the King of Hawaii when one of his small boats was stolen.
