During World War II, Germany tried to capture the Russian city of Stalingrad because it was the site of atrocities committed by Stalin. it had a strategic location along the Volga River. it had a large and persecuted German population. it was where aggression against Germany was centered.

    It had a strategic location along the Volga River. As capturing the city would cut of the oil rich Caucus.
