The Great Migration took place between 1916 and 1970. It involved the mobilization of about 6 million African American people from the rural area of the South to cities in the North of the U. S.

The majority of these people travelled to the North due to the lack of work opportunities and also as a consequence of racism and segregation.

When they finally arrived at destination some problems such as housing conflicts arose, too. Subsequently, many African American people built new small cities inside the existent cities. One of the most important ones was the creation of the Harlem in New York.

In addition, this big migration also has a major impact on art giving birth to the New Negro Movement also known as the Harlem Renaissance.

Moreover, at the end of the Great Migration, the number of people living in the South decreased significantly.

This process took part in the Progressive Era because this period described the vast growth of the U. S population which also brought about cultural, political and economic changes such as the ones mentioned before.
