Why were Chinese American immigrants frequently detained when trying to immigrate through Angel Island?

Many in this era believed that the immigrants were stealing American jobs. While Irish and Italian immigrants were also discriminated upon, they often assimilated into US society. Chinese immigrants were of a different race and were more easily discriminated upon as a result.

They were subject to more scrutiny and discrimination because of their race.
