    I think the meaning of "Curry was a 'New Mexican sheriff of fame.'" is: Curry had a very good reputation.

    Sherrif curry was really famous because he personally took charge in eliminating several bandit gangs and indians that terrorized new mexico. Making him popular enough to run as its mayor.
