How were Western nations able to expand their control over Asia and Africa so quickly?

It was more importantly easier for the Western countries to expand their control over Asia and Africa because of their development in transportation over the oceans through their expeditions carrying thousands of their countrymen to fight for the right to a certain land and the community already settling on it.
