ery, very poorly. Sports heroes, pollitical icons and movie stars rarely merit the adulation of young people. Humanity, American popular culture seems to love building people up, only to expose their frailities and tear them down ... then the long ascent back on the road to redemption and obligatory reporting ...

In the political sphere, I long for those days when civility and privacy were respected and our children not exposed to stains on dresses, plumbing relief and compartmentalization and justification. Despite his flaws, Bill Clinton was a caring, charismatic and effective politician; his work around the world important and substantive. Just spare us the details of people's sex lives unless it jeopardizes national security.

Teachers, firemen, moms and dads coming home to their families every night are the true heroes.
