General MacArthur was forced to order his troops to retreat to Bataan when the Japanese approached his troops.

When the Japanese became stronger in their hold over the Philippines, MacArthur was ordered to relocate to Australia. In Adelaide, MacArthus stated his now famous words "I came through and I shall return".
