    The euro.

The euro is the official currency of the European Union (EU), but not all member countries of the EU have adopted it as their currency. 19 of the 28 member states of the EU currently use the euro as their sole currency, and are referred to as the "eurozone." All but two of the remaining states are committed to joining the eurozone, and new member states of the EU also will be obliged to adopt the euro as their currency.

The euro was introduced to financial markets beginning in 1999 and physical currency (coins and banknotes) were put into circulation beginning in 2002.
