First of all, a union is a group of workers who join together to try to get better wages and better working conditions.

The early strikes by unions had made three things clear to workers, businesses would oppose all attempts by the workers to gain power by striking.

Business owners would oppose strikes by firing union workers, black-listing their leaders, and requiring workers to sign yellow dog contracts.
