Indonesia has hundreds of different ethnic groups and many religious, yet, the vast majority of the population are Muslim of Javanese origins. These cleavages have been important, especially during authoritarian regimes like Suharto (1967-1998) who build Indonesian identity over ethnic identity and religion.
