Why did Japan strongly and passionately defend Iwo Jima?

    The correct answer is because this pacific island was considered to be Japanese homeland. It was a place of one of the biggest pacific battles in the WWII between the US and Japan. It was occupied by the US until 1968 after which was returned to Japan.
