Why did people in most European nations believe that the war that started in August 1914 would end quickly? European nations were suffering from a severe economic depression. There had been drought and famine in many European nations in the preceding decade. Civilians were not allowed to remain in the armed forces for longer than one year. Each nation believed it had superior military forces and strategies.
