The beginning of european settlement of the americas from 1492 was marked by an extensive demand for labor. the earliest forms of labor involved both coerced labor and forms of indentured servitude that utilized the work of europeans, native americans and african peoples. by the late 1600s, this fluid labor arrangement became more restrictive and formalized, with a form of racially (african) based slavery imposed in north america. what factors contributed to this development? how and why did this transformation occur?"

Those who opened farms and needed the workforce realized how the system was bad for them and how they needed to find a new way to get workers, that is slaves. The local Native Americans started dying out because of disease and were often hostile so it was difficult to enslave them, which caused problems for farms. The indentured servants would go away after a while when their debt was paid so they were not good in the long run. Africans could easily be bought as already slaves on the western coast of Africa and were cheap and strong which meant that slavers could easily get a bunch of them and just replace them if they die or anything similar.
