    Hoovervilles, which were really just shantytowns occupied by the newly homeless as a result of the Stock Market Crash of 1929, emerged due to the economic devastation that took place in the United States as a result of the '29 crash and the resulting Great Depression. They were named after Herbert Hoover, who was largely blamed for the Depression.
