The Phoenicians, a Semitic group that inhabited today's Lebanon, developed the first type of alphabet by drawing a symbol (letter) for each consonant sound of their language. Vowels had no written representation and had to be deduced from the sequences of consonants. The Greeks adapted the Phoenician alphabet for use with their ow language, but made one great addition: vowel letters.
