Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov ruled Russia as tsar Nicholas II until the February Revolution of 1917 that brought about the end of the five-hundred-old Romanov monarchy. He had gotten Russia into WWI. When the October Revolution occurred in November that year, the democratic government was overthrown by the Bolsheviks. In July 1918, he and his family were assasinated by the Bolsheviks.
