    William Howard Taft

Taft served as President of the United States from 1909 to 1913. In 1921, President Warren Harding nominated Taft to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Taft held that office from 1921 till 1930 (the year of his death). Earlier in his career, Taft had served in other roles in the justice system - - as Solicitor General of the United States from 1890 to 1892 and as judge for the US Court of Appeals for The Sixth District (1892-1900).
