    I do not have access to the statements but the main reason why Virginia and Maryland imported slaves is because these two colonies began to grow tobacco in large plantations.

    In fact, large-scale Slavery in the U. S. began in Virginia when tobacco was found suitable as cash crop to be grown around the Chesapeake Bay. Before, slavery was rare and mostly confined to domestic households.
