How did the Monroe Doctrine affect foreign policy?

The Monroe Doctrine had two main philosophical effects on the Foreign policy of the United States. These were: - The Monroe Doctrine argues that European influence should be removed from North America. As a result, the United States tried to gain European land on the continent of North America, often by annexation.

Although initially disregarded by the great powers of Europe, the Monroe Doctrine became a mainstay of U. S. foreign policy. In 1823 U. S. President James Monroe proclaimed the U. S. protector of the Western Hemisphere by forbidding European powers from colonizing additional territories in the Americas.
