In the 1950s, following the Great Depression, Hollywood became a target of anti-communist sentiment because the government was afraid that some people in the entertainment industry were communists. This was due to the widespread occurrence of strikes at the time between Hollywood producers and unions such as the Screen Actors Guild. This caused a Hollywood blacklist which denied work to those accused of being communists.
