This law is known as the Indian Self-Determination and Educational Assistance Act of 1975. This law allowed the federal government to grant funds to Native-American tribes. From there, the tribes got to decide how to use these particular funds.

One of the reasons why this was so important to Native Americans was because before this time, America used the policy of termination. This policy used between the 1940's and 1960's and was focused on assimilating Native Americans into "typical" American culture. This resulted in Native Americans losing the ability to control their own reservations and forced them to abandon many of their traditions.

Now with this new law in 1975, the Native Americans could go back to having more control over their reservations/environment.
