    AIDS is a communicable disease that causes the destruction of the immune system and when left untreated can cause death. The main AIDS epidemic occurred in Africa, where people have little access to protection and information. In some countries the number of people living with AIDS reaches 40% of the population.

    As a result, people become ill and lose their ability to work and produce, leading to a drop in aggregate labor force productivity on that continent.
