    Explanation:

    The most famous spy affair of the 20th century, known as the "Rosenberg" case, ended in 1953, with the execution of the couple Julius and Ethel Rosenberg for espionage in favor of the USSR. Although Pope Pius the 12th had also been asked to be pardoned, his spouses Rosenberg were executed on June 19, 1953, in electric chairs at the infamous Sing Sing prison. It was the first execution of civilians convicted of espionage in all of US history.
