What was the system of government in ancient Athens?

    Athens was very famously a democracy, and indeed the first democracy in the world. Also, it was not a representative democracy, but a direct one - all (male) citizens voted directly and not through representatives.

    It was a mixture of a theocracy and a democracy but Athens was leaning on the more democratic side.
