To begin with stern means very serious in discipline or assertion of authority and yearns. It's meant to have a strong feeling of need and longing of something more particularly for something one has lost. They both indicate the element of need and desire and wish to make them alike while their difference is that one is related to the discipline while the other with want and desire.
