He supported a government policy of removing Indians from Virginia lands whereas Governor Berkeley wanted to take a cautious approach and negotiate with the Indians.

Nathaniel Bacon and Governor Berkeley disagreed on how to handle Indians and their hold on lands. Virginia land owners were experiencing raids and attacks by the Indians as well as a desire to expand their land holdings. Under Berkeley's method, the landowners were not protected and they turned to Bacon for leadership. Bacon pulled western landowners together and fought for them. This leadership eventually ended up in a rebellion against the coastal elite and Berkely's leadership.
