It was Nocturnes the work by Frederic Chopin which has 21 pieces for a solo piano.

It was written between 1827 and 1846 and they might be considered the first short work for the piano. It is a well-known contemporary concert repertoire. However, he did not invent the Norturne, he just expanded it and so it became popular.
