Pennsylvania was a generous land grant given to William Penn by king Charles II in 1681 to settle an old debt with Penn's father. The colony was founded as a shelter for Quakers - Penn was a Quaker - and its status was that of a propietary colony. It had a good, mild climate with coastal plains, mountains and plateaus. Penn organized a government based on religious freedom and tolerance. Quakers didn't share the strict rules of the Puritans.
