During the progressive era, pacemakers and other activists sought to seek out social and political injustices and remedy them. Some of the hot button issues of the day were prohibition, corrupt political bosses, workers rights, and women's suffrage. For prohibition, members of temperance groups claimed that alcohol was ruining family life, so they lobbied for congress to pass an amendment that outlawed alcohol consumption and selling. Workers at this time also wanted better working conditions and better pay. Immigrants at this time were being paid meager wages and were working in dismal conditions without being able to join a workers union that would protect them from injuries. women were also fighting for their right to vote, called suffrage. Suffragettes later could vote when the 19th amendment was put into effect.
