    They argued that slaves lived in better conditions than factory workers

    Explanation:

    The racist beliefs of the southern apologists of the time were that there is a chance that some of the blacks have been facing discrimination but they sought to prove that there is mostly a feeling of non animosity among the white and the black.

    They saw the place of the blacks as willful servants who needed the protection of their white owners to survive in the world otherwise they would not be able to survive in the world and thus thought they were better off slaves.
